After you have your channel cleaned up you are ready to turn it into a mask. Make a selection marquee of your channel by pressing the channel's thumbnail while holding down the command key.
After the marquee appears, go back to the layers palette and turn the marquee into a mask by selecting the Add a Mask icon at the bottom of the palette.
